American Walnut (Black)
- Description:
- Heartwood ranges from a deep, rich dark brown to a purplish black. Sapwood is nearly white to tan. Difference between heartwood and sapwood color is great. The grain is mostly straight and open, but some boards have a burled or curly grain.
- Light Sensitivity:
- Floor will lighten over time. Sometimes the floor is stained to maintain the dark color over time.
- Size and Grade Availability:
- Standard widths are 2 1/4, 3 1/4" in a select grade. It is also available in a random width plank in a select or rustic grade. In all grades, expect some white sapwood to appear.
- Comments:
- Frequently used as a highlight material for borders and other inlay techniques.
- Hardness (Janka):
- 1010 (22% softer than Northern Red Oak).
- Dimensional Stability:
- Average (9% more stable than Northern Red Oak).
