American Walnut (Black)
- Description:
- Heartwood ranges from a deep, rich, dark brown to nearly black. Sapwood is nearly white to tan. The difference between heartwood and sapwood color is great. The grain is mostly straight and open, but some boards have a burled or curly grain.
- Light Sensitivity:
- Floor will lighten over time. Sometimes the floor is stained to maintain the dark color.
- Size and Grade Availability:
- Standard widths are 2-1/4", and 3-1/4" in a select grade. It is also available in a random width plank in a select or rustic grade. In all grades, expect some white sapwood to appear.
- Comments:
- Frequently used as a highlight material for borders and other inlay techniques.
- Hardness (Janka):
- 1010 (22% softer than Northern Red Oak).
- Dimensional Stability:
- Average (9% more stable than Northern Red Oak).

- North America.
