Red Birch
- Description:
- Sapwood is creamy yellow or pale white; heartwood is light reddish brown tinged with red. There will be occasional curly/wavy grain in some boards. Boards are selected from the heart of the yellow birch tree.
- Light Sensitivity:
- The floor will amber over time losing some red tones.
- Size and Grade Availability:
- Standard widths are 2-1/4" and 3" in a clear or select grade. It is also available in a random width plank in a clear or select grade. Clear grade will be about 98% heartwood (red
tones). Select grade will be about 80% heartwood.
- Comments:
- Boards will sometimes have splits along the grain of the board (shake).
- Hardness (Janka):
- 1260 (2% softer than Northern Red Oak). Even though it is close to hardness of oak, dents and scratches will appear more obvious because of lack of grain.
- Dimensional Stability:
- Average (10% less stable than Northern Red Oak).
