Red Birch
- Description:
- Sapwood is creamy yellow or pale white; heartwood is light reddish brown tinged with red. There will be occasional curly grain or wavy figure in some boards. Boards are selected from the heart of the yellow birch tree.
- Light Sensitivity:
- The floor will amber over time losing some red tones.
- Size and Grade Availability:
- Standard widths are 2 1/4, 3 " in a clear or select grade. It is also available in a random width plank in a clear or select grade. Clear grade will be about 98% heartwood (red
tones). Select grade will be about 80% heartwood.
- Comments:
- Boards will sometimes have splits along the grain of the board (shake).
- Hardness (Janka):
- 1260 (2% softer than Northern Red Oak). Even though it is close to hardness of oak, dents and scratches will appear larger because of lack of grain.
- Dimensional Stability:
- Average (10% less stable than Northern Red Oak).
