Pattern Possibilities: What to Know Before Choosing a Hardwood Floor Design

Rod Lorenz

We don’t install many patterned floors here at Ralph’s, but that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate their appeal. Many of our customers enjoy learning about different layout options, even if they ultimately choose a more classic installation. Why? Because patterns spark ideas. They help homeowners better understand how floorboards, space, and style all work together.

If you’re thinking about new hardwood or wood-look floors, understanding how patterns influence the final look is a great place to start.

Popular Hardwood Flooring Patterns

Random Plank
The most common pattern, for a reason, is that random plank designs use varying board lengths (and sometimes widths) for a more natural, less uniform look. It’s timeless, flexible, and a smart choice for nearly any space. Bonus: It’s typically more cost-efficient to install with less waste.

Parquet
Made from small pieces of wood arranged in tile-like blocks, parquet patterns can range from geometric precision to artistic flair. It’s eye-catching and dramatic, often used to make a statement in formal rooms or entryways.

Diagonal
Rather than laying boards parallel to your walls, you can angle them to draw the eye outward, giving a room a more expansive feel. Especially useful in smaller or oddly shaped rooms, diagonal installs create subtle movement and interest.

Chevron
A sleek, modern zigzag pattern where each board is cut at an angle to form perfect points. Chevron floors have a crisp, contemporary look that recalls upscale Parisian flats, though they require more precise installation and material planning.

Herringbone
Often confused with chevron, herringbone uses square ends rather than angled ones, resulting in a more staggered, broken-zigzag effect. It’s rich with old-world charm and pairs well with traditional interiors.

Design Tips to Keep in Mind

Even if you stick with a classic layout, it’s worth thinking about how board direction and layout will affect the feel of your home:

  • In open-concept layouts, think about your main line of sight when entering the room.

  • Laying planks parallel to the longest wall can make a room appear more spacious.

  • Diagonal installs don’t have to follow a 45° rule—subtle shifts can still make a big difference.

  • Always follow product-specific installation guidelines for best results.
