Updating my daughter's floor - a personal floor refinishing story.

Rod Lorenz

Have you ever heard the phrase, "the cobbler's kids never get new shoes"? Well with all the projects we have on the go at Ralph's, this sometimes feels like the truth for my family. So when my wife and youngest daughter got together and suggested it was time to update the floor in her bedroom, it wasn't a sure thing.

A little time passed (and possibly it was mentioned a few more times) and I realized it was now or never. The yellow of the natural birch floors worked with the pink walls to create a picture perfect room for any little girl. Except my daughter was now sixteen and definitely ready for a change. So the two of us looked at different floor and paint combinations to determine how to give her room an amazing new look.

We each settled in our roles. I was responsible for the floor, my wife took care of the decor and my daughter took on the overall interior design. I decided to use a reactive stain to turn the floors grey and used an invisible finish that offered no sheen. After replacing the pink paint on the walls with green, the result was a complete transformation and a floor that looked totally new.

In this case the Cobbler's kid got an amazing new look for her room. I am very pleased with how it turned out and even more pleased with how much she likes likes it. Refinishing a floor is the perfect way to give a room new life.
